Tomorrow Steve Jobs gives his keynote presentation at the Macworld Expo. If, as is often suggested, the love of Apple goes beyond mere fandom and reaches the status of a cult: well, this is our Christmas. I guess on that analogy, the World Wide Developer’s Conference must be Easter—closer to the true mysteries of the faith but a little less crowd-pleasing.
I can’t help thinking that if Christ took a lead from Steve Jobs, turning up a couple of times a year and putting on a bit of a show in front of the faithful, he might win back a few sceptics like me. I’m not asking for too much: a miracle, a couple of parables, some topical material. Maybe something ineffable.
