I went through a big Greene phase when I was what, ten or eleven? Twelve maybe? So I’ve read nearly all his books, but not for a very long time. I re-read this because my mother read it with her book group.
Greene put some of his novels into a separate category — ‘entertainments’ — and this is one of those. A comic novel, basically, though with a darker edge to it than, say, P.G. Wodehouse. It’s about a vacuum cleaner salesman in Cuba who’s recruited by the British Secret Service.
