I had a few attempts with my telescope and adapter while I was in Wales; it can produce quite good results, but you can tell it’s not designed as a photographic lens. It struggles badly in poor light and it also tends to have some quite striking chromatic aberration; this shot had a big magenta fringe along the white stripe running to the bird’s eye, which I removed with Gimp. Really you need very good light and even then the subject needs to be pretty close — which when you’re trying to photograph birds isn’t always easy. Fortunately the birds on Skomer are exceptionally obliging.

Still, while I may not be about to win any wildlife photography competitions, from a hobbyist point of view being able to get shots like this is very satisfying.
