Not with a bang but with a whimper. But either way: thank fuck for that. Watching their recent performances has been a dismal experience, but hopefully over the next eight months (or whatever it is), they’ll all play themselves into sparkling form with their clubs, put this run of bad games behind them, and come into the World Cup finals feeling sharp and confident.

I think England will do well in the World Cup – probably the quarter or semi finals.
Scotland were terrible. After the victory in Norway, some people thought the tide was turning. I knew we would lose at home to Belarus. It was no surprise to me when it happened, although it still felt pretty bad.
England certainly have a strong group of players at the moment. So much depends on the luck of the draw – England might have Brazil as our first knock-out match, or we might get lucky and avoid all the big teams until the final. There’s just a worrying sense that the team have lost all momentum at the moment. At least they’ve got a few moths to get it sorted out. It’s a shame not to have Scotland there for the second time in a row, but I expect it’ll come round. Swings and roundabouts. Austria 2008, maybe.
